Power tussle consumes Kogi Speaker, deputy
Kogi Assembly speaker impeached. LawalBy Doyin Ojosipe, with agency report
In the aftermath of the just concluded governorship election in Kogi state, fresh crisis has consumed the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Alhaji Jimoh Lawal, and his deputy Ali Akuh.
17 out of 25 members of the House yesterday impeached the duo of Lawal and Akuh/
Also impeached was the minority leader, Hassan Bello.
Lawal was consequently replaced by Godwin Osuyo with John Abbah as the new deputy speaker and Enenche Linus as the new the minority leader.
Soon after the impeachment, the new deputy speaker, Osuyo addressed journalists, saying that the impeached Speaker was incompetent, and lacked the capacity to work in harmony with other members of the House.
He said, “the impeachment of the Speaker of the Assembly though hurting was the right one, to move the state forward.”
Osuyo accused the former Speaker of not representing member’s interest effectively.
He also urged the public not to see the removal of three principal officers of the House as an affront on the executive adding that it also has nothing to do with the incoming governor.
However, Peoples Daily learnt that the impeachment of the Speaker may not be unconnected with constituency clash in terms of representation, as both the governor-elect Alhaji Yahaya Bello and the impeached speaker hail from Okene in Kogi Central while the new Speaker hails from Ogori-Magongo in same Kogi Central.
