House intervenes in plans to deport 29, 000 Nigerians from UK

House of Representatives yesterday mandated its Committee on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs to quickly intervene in the case of 29, 000 Nigerians due to be deported from the United Kingdom, UK.
 The resolution followed a motion on matters of urgent public importance titled ‘Need to Address the Issues and Challenges Surrounding 29, 000 Nigerians Tagged for Deportation From the UK.’
In her lead debate, sponsor of the motion, Hon. Rita Orji noted that the deportation faced by these Nigerians was a result of a migration crisis created by troubled regions of the globe.
 She pointed out that most of them due for deportation had spent a minimum of 30 years and had lost touch with the country.
 Orji argued that deporting these Nigerians without appropriately ascertaining their identity, economic situation, health and family status would constitute problem to themselves, Nigeria and Nigerians.
 The lawmaker further stressed that the UK government did not disclose whether those facing deportation had legal right to stay in the UK or not.
 She also expressed worry that most of them facing deportation might not have been to Nigeria since they left and might no longer have families in the country.
 The motion was later adopted by the House and referred to the Committee on Diaspora and Foreign Affairs for swift action.
