National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has vowed to close down any bakery in Kaduna that is not registered with i the agency.
The state Coordinator of the Agency, Mr. Kenneth Azikiwe disclosed this in his address at a workshop organised for Master Baker and caterers in Kaduna at the weekend.
Mr. Azikwe added that the plan to go after the unregistered bakery is overdue but the Agency was waiting for the workshop to take place before the enforcement begins.
The NAFDAC Coordination added that the main reason for the clamp down is to fished out the Mater Bakers that are still using potassium Bromate in baking their bread.
This chemical according to him is cancerous and the Agency has been directed to shut any bakery found wanting.
“After this workshop with the ‘Theme Food and Hygiene you as Master Baker will have no excuses for not registering your bakery withNAFDAC. The registration is for your own advantages because you will be giving a NAFDAC number which show that your breads are free from Potassium Bromated.
“if you refused then you will have yourself to blame because henceforth our monitoring teams will be on the field and any breads without registration number will destroy . the health of Nigerians supersede your business interest.” He warned.
In the own remarks the Head Weight and Measure of Federal Ministry of Trade and Commerce Alhaji Yunusa Saidu said all bakers must adhere to the minimum weight of breads as directed by law and the minimum weight is 225 and any short of this attract a fine of N50, 000.according to him the weight must be indicated on the bread package.
