Bayelsa guber: INEC fixes Jan 9 for Southern Ijaw re-run poll

Bayelsa guber: INEC fixes Jan 9 for Southern Ijaw re-run poll
By Yomi Kareem  /   December 18, 2015
Smarting from consultative meeting with leaders of the political parties which fielded candidates in the December 5 Bayelsa State governorship polls, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has fixed election in Southern Ijaw and other polling units where results were cancelled for Saturday, the 9th of January, 2016.
The consultative meeting which ended at the INEC state headquarters yesterday re-affirmed the commitment to the Peace Accord signed by all contestants and political parties at the Peace Summit held in Yenagoa on Tuesday, 11th November 2015 for the conduct of free, fair and credible election in Bayelsa state.
It also agreed to decentralize the distribution of sensitive election materials fairly and equitably and called for the neutrality of the security agencies, emphasizing that the lead agency in the election should be the Nigerian Police.
It therefore appealed to INEC to ensure the functionality of the Smart Card Reader (SCR) to avoid hitches in the election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had on Monday, the 7th of December, 2015 cancelled the election in Southern Ijaw, following widespread violence, ballot box snatching and abduction of electoral officials.
