Lagos decries alarming cases of violence against children

…Says more enforcement of Child Rights Law needed

The Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Lola Akande has decried the alarming cases of violence against children, noting that recorded data over four years in the state is a pointer that more enforcement of Child Rights Law is needed to contain the trend.
Speaking during a 3-day Technical Working Committee meeting on Violence Against Children, organised by the Lagos State Government in collaboration with UNICEF,  at Bezer Hotel in Ota, Ogun State, Akande said the gathering should ensure active participation to develop and finalise plans towards the development of the state’s Priority Action Plan and the major launch in February 2016.
Akande also commended the commitment and support of UNICEF as the major driver in ensuring the protection of children in Nigeria, describing them as a worthy partner in progress.
Earlier, UNICEF child Protection Specialist, Mrs Roseleen Akinroye, encouraged participants on the urgent need to contribute meaningfully from their vast experience working with children.
She also enjoined the meeting to come up with a draft Priority Action for Lagos to address Violence Against Children (VAC), adding that this will be a tool for creating awareness and getting support for the eradication of Violence Against Children in Lagos State.
Participants at the meeting were drawn from Lagos State Child Rights Implementation Committee consisting of various line ministries and agencies in the state, NGOS, media, and religious organisation.
