Kano State Censor Board has banned public dance, known as Solo Dance, engaged by teenage girls across the 44 Local Government Areas in the state.
Addressing journalists in his office yesterday, Executive Director of the Board, Isma’il Na-Abba Afakalla, said the ban came following growing concern over prevalence of immoral acts committed at places of the show, adding that the practice has negated the former ones organised by drama clubs called Stage Drama, aimed at educating, enlightening and entertaining the public.
According to him, the shows involve participation of teenage girls to dance to the music being played in open square for money, lamenting that the acts were not restricted to the city but spread across the rural areas of the state.
“The practice of this Solo Dance where our teenage girls engage in public dancing in order to get money is worrisome and must stop in this state. There were shows similar to this called Stage Drama organised by drama clubs in order to educate, entertain and enlighten the public. Those ones were more moral than these ones. Ironically, the practice has spread across the rural areas of the state. This prompted us to rise up to stop it in order to avoid further escalation of immorality in the state. He said.
Afakallah also said that a lot of young girls from neighbouring states have come to participate in the illicit act, stressing that his board would be up and doing to see that the practice no longer exist in the state.
He also called on the music bands to submit their respective names to the board for screening, adding that the call was made in order to check the activities of the musicians.
Afakallah further called on parents to be vigilante on the movement of their children, adding that the parents should also monitor the type of friends associating with their wards.
