Tragedy struck yesterday in Sabo area of Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when a suspected drug addict allegedly killed his father identified as Baba Basirat.
Investigation revealled that the incident occurred at No. 25, Akintobi Badejo Street of the area on Tuesday night, when the middle aged man whose name could not be ascertained as at press time, allegedly pushed his 69-year-old father during an argument.
Journalists who were at the scene of the crime got the shock of their lives, as family members attacked them, destroying a vehicle belonging to Nigeria Television Authority, NTA 12, Abeokuta.
Family members and other sympathisers pounced on the journalists and queried their interest to cover the incident, which they referred to as family affair.
Members of the family and other neighbours tried their best to keep sealed lips as they didn’t want the matter to get to the police or public knowledge; but some of them started talking during the attack on the journalists.
A source at the family house claimed that the father had taken his son to church for deliverance from the drug addiction on Tuesday, but he started struggling with his father at the entrance of the church, pushing him and he collapsed immediately.
The man, an indigene of Ogbomoso in Oyo State, was said to have been rushed to Mercy Hospital in Onikolobo area of Abeokuta, where he was reportedly confirmed dead.
As at yesterday morning, the alleged killer-son again went wild and destroyed a blue Honda Accord car with registration number Lagos, AGL 763 AQ belonging to his brother-in-law before he was captured.
As at time journalists visited, the son was said to be on sedative and tied in a room to further prevent his violent acts while the deceased was also kept in another room.
One of the sources who preferred anonymity said, “Baba became ill and the boy was arguing with him because he is like a drug addict and takes dangerous substances; and whenever he drinks, he will be causing trouble
“His father concluded to take him to a church for deliverance alongside his brother. He even bought another alcoholic drink on the way to church and when Baba came back he complained that he wasn’t feeling fine and he was taken to hospital where he was confirmed dead.
“As a parent, the father was not happy that the boy smokes Indian hemp and so much has been spent on him and he was not ready to take him to psychiatric hospital because of finance; that was what took them to the church before he came back and broke the glass of a car belonging to his brother-in-law.”
Although arrangement was ongoing to bury the deceased who was said to be Muslim, but a family member said they were still waiting for other siblings based outside the state.
The source said it was only the children of the deceased who could decide on whether he should be buried in Abeokuta or taken to his hometown in Oyo State.
