Rep’s aide sent to prison over landgrabbing

A 35-year-old man, Fasasi Abideen Olawale, who claimed to be the principal assistant to a House of Representatives member from Lagos State has been sent to Ikoyi prison, Lagos, for failing to perfect his bail conditions granted him by a Lagos State magistrates’ court for allegedly conspiring with others now at large to invade a landed property with weapons at Shangisha area of Ketu, Lagos.
 The accused was arrested by the operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, Western Nigeria.
 After investigation by Inspector Anthony Ogiza and his team, the accused was arraigned before an Igbosere magistrates’ court, Lagos on a five-count charge of felony to wit: threatening violence, forceful entry, malicious damage and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
 Police prosecutor, Sgt. Innocent Odugbo, informed the court that the accused and others now at large committed the offence on 16 June and 26 June, 2015 at 66, Adekunle Banjo street, off CMD Road, Shangisha, Lagos.
 Odugbo told the court that the accused led others while armed with weapons such as guns, battle axe, cutlasses and sticks, to invade a landed property belonging to Matthias Chuma Muomah which he leased to Eat and Go Limited, a franchise of Domino Pizza, and chased away all the workers working in the land and pulled down a building valued at N20 million.
 Odugbo noted that the offences the accused committed are punishable under section 409, 52, 51, 338 and 166(d) of the criminal laws of Lagos State, 2011.
 The accused, however, denied the police allegations in the open court and his counsel, Barrister Emmanuel Bayam prayed the court to admit his client to bail on the most liberal terms and promised that he will not jump bail because his wife had just given birth to a child.
 The presiding magistrate, Mrs. F. F. George, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N200,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.
 George adjourned the case till 28 January, 2016 for mention while the defendant was taken to Ikoyi Prisons when he could not fulfill his bail conditions before the court closed proceedings for the day.
